The Purpose Behind the Name
Quill & Cross was established with a simple conviction: God’s Word is true, Christ is supreme, and all things exist for the glory of God. In a world filled with competing voices, shifting opinions, and confidence in human wisdom, this ministry seeks to direct attention back to the unchanging truth of Scripture and the sufficiency of Jesus Christ.
The name Quill & Cross reflects the purpose behind this work. The quill is the instrument through which words are written. The cross is the message that gives those words their meaning. One is merely a tool; the other is the heart of the Christian faith. Without the cross, the quill has nothing worth saying.
This is not a ministry built around the pursuit of originality, recognition, or the elevation of human wisdom. It is an effort to handle the Word of God faithfully, to consider its truths carefully, and to encourage others to see the beauty, authority, and sufficiency of Christ in every area of life.
Rooted in the Word of God
At the foundation of Quill & Cross is the conviction that Scripture is the inspired, authoritative, and sufficient Word of God. It is not merely a source of spiritual insight or a collection of principles for better living. It is God’s revelation of Himself, His character, His purposes, and His redemptive work through Jesus Christ.
As Paul wrote:
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” — 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Scripture does not need to be improved upon by human wisdom. It must be studied carefully, interpreted faithfully, and applied humbly. Our opinions must be brought under its authority rather than using it to justify what we already believe. Where God’s Word corrects us, we must be willing to receive correction. Where it challenges our assumptions, we must be willing to reconsider them. And where it offers comfort, hope, and assurance, we must learn to rest in what God has promised.
The aim is not simply to know more about the Bible, but to grow in our understanding of the God who has spoken through it and to live in faithful response to His truth.
Centered on the Supremacy of Christ
Jesus Christ is not one subject among many in the Christian faith. He is its center. The Scriptures testify to His person and work, revealing Him as the eternal Son of God, the promised Messiah, the only Mediator between God and man, and the Savior of sinners.
His life, death, and resurrection are not merely the beginning of the Christian life; they remain its foundation and hope. We do not outgrow our need for Christ. We grow in our understanding of how completely we depend upon Him.
For this reason, Quill & Cross seeks to keep Christ central in its studies, reflections, and discussions. Theology should not become an exercise in intellectual pride, nor should biblical knowledge become a means of elevating ourselves above others. Truth should humble us, deepen our gratitude for grace, strengthen our faith, and lead us toward greater love for the Lord and His people.
The ultimate aim is not simply to accumulate knowledge, but to know Christ more clearly, treasure Him more deeply, and live in light of His lordship.
Grounded in the Sovereignty of God’s Grace
Quill & Cross is shaped by the conviction that salvation belongs to the Lord from beginning to end. We are not saved by our wisdom, our moral achievements, or our ability to make ourselves acceptable to God. Salvation is the work of His sovereign grace, accomplished through Jesus Christ and received through faith.
This conviction is inseparable from the way we understand the Christian life. Our faith, our repentance, our growth in holiness, and our hope for the future all depend upon the grace of God. We have no grounds for boasting in ourselves. Every reason for confidence rests in the finished work of Christ and the faithfulness of the God who saves His people.
These convictions are often associated with the Reformed tradition, and they shape the theological perspective reflected throughout this ministry. The purpose, however, is not to promote a label for its own sake. It is to examine what Scripture teaches, to consider its implications carefully, and to submit our understanding to the authority of God’s Word.
The doctrines of grace are not intended to make us careless, proud, or indifferent. Properly understood, they should humble us before God, deepen our dependence upon Him, and lead us to worship with greater reverence and gratitude.
What You Will Find Here
Quill & Cross offers devotionals, and writings on the Christian life. These writings approach different subjects with the same underlying desire: to bring Scripture to bear upon what we believe, how we think, and how we live.
This ministry is intended to serve believers who desire to grow in their understanding of Scripture, who are willing to have their thinking challenged by God’s Word, and who recognize that spiritual maturity requires continual instruction, correction, and dependence upon grace.
The goal is not to provide an answer to every question or to suggest that every subject can be addressed simply. Rather, it is to approach God’s Word with reverence, handle its teachings responsibly, and encourage readers to examine what they hear in light of Scripture.
The Stewardship of the Quill
The writing found here is a gift from God and like any good gift it must be stewarded well. This will not be a platform for self-exaltation. Words can inform, encourage, challenge, and clarify, but they cannot regenerate a heart or produce spiritual life. Only God can do that through the work of His Spirit.
Any ability to write, any understanding of Scripture, and any opportunity to encourage another believer are gifts of God’s providence. They are not grounds for boasting, but reasons for gratitude and a greater sense of responsibility. The task is to write carefully, teach truthfully, acknowledge limitations, and resist the temptation to place personal opinion where Scripture has not spoken.
I do not know how widely these writings may be read or how the Lord may choose to use them. That is not mine to determine. My responsibility is to seek faithfulness in the work entrusted to me and to leave the results in His hands.
Whether a particular piece reaches many readers or encourages one weary believer, the measure of its worth is not its popularity. It is far better for a reader to leave with a clearer understanding of God’s Word than with an elevated opinion of the person who wrote it.
To the Glory of God Alone
Everything at Quill & Cross is intended to serve a purpose greater than the writing itself. The Scriptures direct us to Christ, Christ reveals the glory of God, and the Christian life is lived in grateful response to His grace.
My prayer is that these pages will encourage a deeper love for Scripture, a clearer understanding of the gospel, a greater appreciation for the supremacy of Christ, and a more humble dependence upon the sovereign grace of God. If the Lord is pleased to use these writings to instruct, correct, comfort, or encourage even one of His people, the thanks and glory belong to Him.
The quill is only an instrument. The message belongs to Christ.
